The Panzer I was the first practical tank mass-produced by Germany, which was banned from developing tanks after its defeat in World War I.
Production of the Ausf. A began in 1934, followed by the improved Ausf. B in 1936.
The Ausf. A's 57 horsepower engine was upgraded to 100 horsepower, and the welded hull was extended by approximately 40 cm.
It was armed with two MG13 machine guns.
Originally developed as a training vehicle, the Panzer I saw active combat, starting with the Spanish Civil War that broke out in 1936, the invasion of Poland in September 1939, the French front in 1940, the Balkan invasion in 1941, and the early stages of the Russian front.
