Go Nagai's fantastical sci-fi masterpiece, "Teten Doji," has been reissued in a new edition, perfectly recreating the original color pages and frontispiece!
Go Nagai's "Teten Doji" was serialized in "Shonen Magazine" from 1976 to 1978.
In the 1970s, Go Nagai was at the peak of his career, releasing a string of masterpieces in rapid succession, including "Mazinger Z" (Shonen Jump, 1972-73), "Cutie Honey" (Shonen Champion, 1973-74), and "Dororon Enma-kun" (Shonen Sunday, 1973-74).
In particular, Shonen Magazine was home to a number of masterpieces, including Omorai-kun (1972), Devilman (1972-73), Violence Jack (1973-74), and Iyahaya Minamitomo (1974-75), spanning a wide range of styles from comedy to science fiction, and it's no exaggeration to say that it was Nagai Go's main battlefield at the time.
Amidst this torrent of creative energy, he wrote "Teten Doji," a fantasy romance centered around the motif of demons, a slight departure from his previous work and published in Magazine.
While drawing on the legend of Shuten Doji, the demon said to have lived in Mt. Oe, the story changes setting with each issue and even expands in scale, transcending time and space. The plot twists, which have been laid out throughout the story since the beginning, are brilliantly resolved as the story builds to a grand finale. Its ingenious structure stands out even among Go Nagai's works, and will surely remind readers of the author's skill as a storyteller.
The popularity of this work, supported by its quality, is evident from the numerous media mix projects it has developed, including a novelization (1986-89) and an OVA (1989-91) by the author's brother, writer Yasuo Nagai, as well as a remake by Masato Natsumoto titled "Gomaden Teten Doji" (2002-05), serialized in Champion RED.
