Q: When I take a photo with a flash attached to my camera, I get black edges in my photos. How can I fix this? A: This is caused by the "flash sync speed." The flash sync speed is the fastest shutter speed at which the flash can fire when the camera's shutter is fully open. This value varies depending on the camera model, but it is generally set between 1/200 and 1/250 seconds, with some models set to 1/180 seconds or less. If the shutter speed exceeds this sync speed, the shutter curtain movement may prevent the flash from illuminating the entire frame, resulting in a black band (black edges) appearing in part of the photo. To resolve this issue, slow down the shutter speed below the flash sync speed (e.g., from 1/250 to 1/200 seconds). By adjusting the shutter speed without changing the aperture (f-stop) or ISO sensitivity, you can prevent the black edges from appearing while maintaining proper exposure.
